In July 2022, the Ishikawa Prefectural Library moved from Honda-machi in Kanazawa to Kodatsuno, where it opened on the former site of the Kanazawa University Faculty of Engineering. The library is affectionately known as “Hyakumangoku Bibliobaum.” The name combines biblio, the Latin word for “book,” with Baum, the German word for “tree.” “Hyakumangoku,” meaning “one million koku,” reflects the rich history and cultural heritage of Ishikawa. The name expresses the library’s hope of supporting the growth of local residents through encounters not only with books, but also with people, objects, and information. It also represents the idea that the library itself will continue to grow and evolve. The library consists of four floors above ground and one basement level, with a total floor area of approximately 22,000 square meters. Its most distinctive feature is its elegant exterior, where layers of glass and panels create a distinctive and contemporary appearance.

Turning Pages of Life
The library’s concept is “a place where unexpected encounters with books and new experiences can help you turn the page of your own life.” This idea seems to be an important part of the library’s identity, reflected in the phrase “windows for encounters with books,” which is used to describe parts of the interior. The library was designed by Mitsuru Senda, one of Japan’s leading architects. His notable works include the Toyama Children’s Mirai-kan in Taikoyama Land and Fugan Canal Park, home to a Starbucks often described as one of the most beautiful in the world. His designs are characterized by a strong presence that nevertheless blends naturally into its surroundings. Inside the library, the extensive use of wood creates a warm atmosphere, making it almost seem as though the entire space is made of wood. The interior also incorporates the five traditional colors of Ishikawa, known as “Kaga Gosai”: crimson, indigo, ochre, green, and ancient purple. These colors are thoughtfully arranged according to the orientation of the building and on the fourth floor, adding a distinctive sense of local character to the space.

More Than Books
Of course, the Ishikawa Prefectural Library is a wonderful place to enjoy books, but it also offers many ways to enjoy a library beyond simply borrowing them. The distinctive architecture, along with its stylish sofas and chairs—some of which have even appeared in a popular manga—creates a space filled with beautiful photo opportunities. And yes, photography is welcome, as long as visitors observe basic courtesy and consideration for others. With so many striking details throughout the building, it is hard to resist taking a few photos. There are even areas where visitors can enjoy food and drinks. The traditional idea that “food and drinks are not allowed in libraries” takes on a whole new meaning here. So, feel free to relax, take in the atmosphere, and enjoy the library at your own pace.
探索
A Universe of Books
Upon entering Bookrium, visitors step from darkness into a 15-meter-wide wall screen where books are visualized as a rotating universe. Interactive touch panels allow exploration of Ishikawa-related, children's, and adult books, revealing their content and locations. As related titles expand across the screen, Bookrium invites unexpected discoveries and new encounters with books.
